We have just had a glorious week in the Lake District, (Good weather makes all the difference), and were lucky enough to get a space at Castlerigg farm.
The site is beautifully located with fells on all sides and a glimpse of Dewentwater below. The staff were always cheerful and helpful and the facilities are very good. Very clean toilets/washroom, (their always seemed to be someone in their mopping or checking), only 3 showers but even when busy we never had to wait very long.
Fellow campers were very well behaved as their were some site rules including 10:30 noise restrictions, which does make camping a pleasure for those who want to get to sleep or just enjoy the twilight atmosphere.
Keswick is very closeby but you would think that you were miles from anywhere.
We would recommend the site and intend to go back regularly.

Lovely Campsite
Just a quick note to say that we have now been staying at the campsite for the last 4 years since our friends recommended it to us. We have stayed when the site has been very quiet and also when its busy - every time the shower block and toilets are immaculate and the shop always seems to have those items that you always forget!
We are going back again this weekend are hoping that the forecast snow holds off!
We can't recommend this site enough.

If your looking for a good area to walk and a great location to start from then Castlerigg Farm fits the bill. The site is at the bottom of Walla Crag you don't need to use your car you just walk from the site and off you go.
The Heights Hotel is 150 yards from the site and handy for a drink but as its totally vegetarian we found it o.k for a one off meal but it wasn't the best vegetarian food we'd ever had.
On our last night we decided to travel out of Keswick for a meal and found the Mill Inn in Mungrisedale, the food was wonderful but its best to ring before you go as they are very popular.
Our friends who have a disabled son informed us of the new footpath at the back of Latrigg, apparently it makes accessing the top a lot easier and they had wonderful views.
Our only other tip is, if your planning a trip around the lake, get your tickets from the camp site shop as they do discount tickets. We had a wonderful day as a ticket allows you to get off the launch, do a walk and get on again. If you want you can get off at every stop, a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) cost us £16.00.

Collection for Air Ambulance
When you go to Castlerigg Farm they do a very worthy collection for Air Ambulance. They have a large plastic pencil in the shop where you place the money, its highly visible and a good way of attracting peoples attention.
Every morning Id go to the shop for milk and if the children came with me they always wanted to place a few pennies in the Air Ambulance collection. To do this I had to lift them up so they could reach.
One day on our way out of the site we stopped at the shop to buy sweets and drinks, this time it was Helen my wife who went in with the children and I stayed at the doorway with the dog.
As usual the children wanted to put pennies in the Air Ambulance collection pencil which by this time is about 3/4 full, so Helen lifts the pencil off the counter so the children could reach and ............... you've guessed it, the bottom falls out of the pencil and there are coins everywhere. The coins dropped in the shelves amongst the bread and biscuits, under the counter and some even rolled out of the door where I was standing.
This was the first time I've ever seen my wife speechless, her face was a picture.
So Castlerigg Farm, you managed to do something I haven't been able to do in 12 years of marriage.
I just hope she doesn't read this.

Mill Inn at Mungrisedale
We wanted to tell you about our wonderful holiday last August when we stayed at your site.
With our 2 children aged 8 & 10 my husband and I had a lovely day walking through the forest at Winlatter. It was one of those hot days when the cool of the forest was welcome so we were able to do a good walk without the children getting too tired. Although there was a tea room at the visitor centre we took a packed lunch as we weren't sure where we would be at lunch time and found a picnic area where we all sat and watched the birds. The walks were clearly marked and there were different walks for different abilities so no problems of not being able to take young children.
On our last night we decided to go out for a meal and went to a place called the Mill Inn at Mungrisedale, we had a wonderful meal and could recommend it to anyone although I would advise people to book as it was very busy

Enjoying Castlerigg
I thought I would drop you a few lines to let you know we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Castlerigg Farm.
The views are spectacular, be it first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
We hit on immensely well the first week for the weather. It was gorgeous! We just seemed to laze about, relax, look round the shops and go down to the Lake for picnics. I tried to persuade Andrew to come in the water but he was having none of it so I had to settle for Max who never needs a reason to get wet! He thinks he is a duck as whenever you throw a stone in, he always goes under and brings out the biggest BOULDER you have ever seen! Very funny to watch as at one point he had an audience. Maybe we should have thrown a hat on the ground to see if we could make some money from his party trick!
Then at the weekend it was Max’s 7th birthday where we just had to celebrate with balloons, banners and a BBQ. Some of the family came up and we all had a great time. Max loved his Steak pie (for his birthday cake) from your shop but didn’t think much of the candle we had stuck in it! I think the other campers thought we were mad? Maybe we are!
Second week weather wise was not as good but that gave us a kick up the bum to get out and about on those hills we love so much!
We walked up Dodd, which held beautiful views between Derwntwater & Bassenthwaite Lake. This was a last minute decision from Andrew (due to Skiddaw being called off coz of low cloud) and what a great walk it turned out to be. Whilst out we got talking to a family who had a 2 year old with them she was fair trotting along. Although she stayed on the forest track with her Dad when the rest of the group went up to the summit, it was still amazing to see! Plus with my surname being Dodds before I was married I guess we had to get up there too!
Then as our week drew to a close the chance of getting up Skiddaw seemed bleak due to the really low cloud and dreary weather. We had promised ourselves we would do it this holiday, as everytime we visit Keswick we always do the smaller climbs, Catbells, Bull Crag, Walla Crag etc
So on Thursday (day before we left) yes you guessed it we bit the bullet and decided to make the trek up Skiddaw. It was dry with very low cloud and was COLD on the top. I could hardly keep hold of my cup of coffee! But boy was it worth it for the views and for the sense of achievement and to say yes we finally did it. With intermittent cloud clearance we took a few photos and got to see for miles and miles. However we will be going back up, as on a sunny day, the views would be awesome and it would be nice to sit and eat our lunch without feeling like we were gonna get blown off the side of the mountain!
We will definitely be returning in the future. Not too long I hope, for a few days as that was our main 2 weeks of the year spent at Castlerigg Farm.

Travelling via Bus and Train to Castlerigg Farm Campsite
Decided to spend our holiday in the lake district this year and as we don't have a car we decided to go by train. We found the best way was to travel was to get the train to Penrith then catch the bus from Penrith to Keswick. We are seasoned campers and don't carry a lot of pack so on arrival in Keswick we departed the bus at the bottom of the Hawthorns and as the bus left us it turned right to go in to Keswick. We turned left towards Ambleside and Windermere and walked up the hill, its a bit of a steep climb so if you have a lot of luggage I suggest you stay on the bus to the bus station in town and get a taxi to the site.
It took us around 15 minutes to walk to the site, its well signposted and you cant miss the large brown sign at the end of the lane. Walking up the lane the first site you come to is Castlerigg Hall, its a very nice site but a lot bigger than Castlerigg Farm with more touring caravans and statics and we didn't find the views from their camp field as good so its worth the extra 50 yards walk up the lane to the farm site.
On your way to Castlerigg farm at the lane end you will see a bus stop in to Keswick, although there isn't a bus stop on the opposite side of the road we did find that if you stand in the hedge and hold out your hand the bus will stop to pick you up on its way to Windermere, I think the buses at the end of the lane are 555. Happy walking.
